PIRATE has been developed by a group of Auckland Rescue Helicopter Trust doctors and intensive care paramedics who are passionate about education. We want to share our secret pre-hospital skills with doctors who are unfamiliar with working in this environment.
All profits from this course will be put towards furthering the education of our paramedic group.
FACULTY

Dr. KERRY HOLMES
Kerry is a distinguished member of the Waitemata Anaesthesia dept. He has been working for the Auckland rescue helicopter trust since 2019, where he is the airway lead. When not working on helicopters he likes to point at them and wave as they go past.

Dr. EMMA BATISTICH
Emma is a Emergency Medicine Specialist at Auckland City Hospital and Pre-Hospital Physician. Initially attracted to the HEMS job by the red suit, she soon discovered that she had a passion for prehospital medicine so has kept it up for the last 5 years. She is currently the co-lead for education at Westpac Rescue. She likes ducks, cycling and chocolate. Dislikes pukekos, running and undercooked chicken. Ask her about her scones.

Dr. ALANA HARPER
Alana is an emergency medicine specialist at Auckland DHB and has been messing about in helicopters with the Auckland Rescue Helicopter trust for almost 10 years. She likes lifting heavy things, long walks on the beach, a decent (amount of) pinot gris and dislikes any hint of ‘pants on the outside’ behaviour…

CASEY DRUM – Intensive Care Flight Paramedic
Casey’s relationship with rescue started and grew in the outdoors over a 10 year international career in expedition whitewater rafting. This transitioned him nicely into another 10 year career in prehospital paramedicine with roles as a clinical educator, a remote clinical advisor, a clinical coach, a rescue swimmer and a flight intensive care paramedic. Outside of work Casey likes to start as many strange projects around his house without ever quite completing any of them, and then go mountain biking.

ROB GEMMELL – Intensive Care Paramedic
22 years in ambulance services, 16 years as ICP, 14 years in helicopters
Surf, windsurf, swimming…not always in that order.
Old , grey, balding, need to lose a few kgs
Live in a houseful of females, but love it
Love a tall cold glass of Pimms

JOSH SANDERS – Intensive Care Flight Paramedic
Having spent 8 years in St John, both in Ambulances and Rapid Response vehicles, Josh noted the grass was definitely greener on the other side. Josh now splits his time between the Auckland Rescue Helicopter Trust as a qualified coffee drinker, and on the road with St John maintaining his clinical skills. Although the most common response from patients and family is “when are your parents showing up”, he assures us that he is actually old enough to drive, and isn’t just 3 children stacked in a flight suit.
